Jon McBride Autographs
Jon McBride is an American astronaut and former naval officer known for his remarkable achievements in space. He was born on August 14, 1943, in Charleston, West Virginia. McBride began his astronaut career as a captain in the U.S. Navy in 1979. He was a naval aviator and flew combat missions in Vietnam. Kennedy Space Center's Space Shuttle Operations Department, where he became the Shuttle Landing and Rollout Director, was his first step in the space program. McBride made the first of his two space flights as a mission specialist on STS-41-G Challenger, launched on the Space Shuttle Challenger, to an orbit in October 1984. The mission's primary goal was to deploy the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite.
Two years later, McBride served as the pilot on STS-31 Discovery, which was launched on the space shuttle discovery in April 1990. The crew of STS-31 assisted in deploying the Hubble Space Telescope, which remains one of the most well-known space missions to this day. McBride logged over 566 hours in space on his two missions, which earned him a place among the elite group of American astronauts. McBride served NASA as Chief of the Astronaut Office from 1992 to 1994, after retiring from NASA in 1994, after which he became involved in various business and philanthropic enterprises.
In recognition of his exceptional service to the United States as an astronaut, McBride has been awarded many military and spaceflight honors. The Navy Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal are among the awards he received from the Navy. He has been awarded the Space Exploration Award by Aviation Week and Space Technology and been inducted into the Aerospace Walk of Honor. In addition to serving in the US Navy and as an astronaut for NASA, McBride has held various senior leadership positions with not-for-profit and for-profit companies. Today, he continues his work to promote STEM education and inspire the next generation of space explorers.
