Ken Mattingly Autographs
Ken Mattingly is a former American astronaut, fighter pilot and Naval Aviator. He was born on March 17, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, and studied aeronautical engineering at Auburn University in Alabama. Mattingly began his career as a naval aviator, flying missions as a combat pilot in the Vietnam War. He later served as a test pilot for the US Navy, where he set altitude and speed records.
Mattingly's space career took off in 1966 when he joined NASA. He trained as a Command Module Pilot for the Apollo 13 mission that would later become one of the most famous missions in space history. However, he was removed from the mission hours before it launched, after being exposed to German measles. Mattingly eventually flew into space on Apollo 16 in 1972 and served as the Command Module Pilot. He spent over 64 hours in lunar orbit while fellow astronauts, John Young and Charlie Duke, explored the moon's surface.
Mattingly's space career did not end at Apollo 16, as he also flew on the Space Shuttle as the Commander of STS-4 in 1982 and as the Pilot of STS-51-C in 1985. In total, he spent 21 days, 6 hours, and 33 minutes in space across his three missions. He retired from NASA in 1985 and went on to become the Executive Vice President of Lockheed Martin Corporation. Mattingly has received numerous awards throughout his career, including the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, Navy Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Navy Air Medal.
