Kevin Ford is a former NASA astronaut, naval aviator, and retired United States Air Force colonel. He was born on July 7, 1960, in Portland, Indiana, and grew up in Montpelier. After graduating from high school, Ford went on to Purdue University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering in 1982. Ford joined the United States Air Force in 1982 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He completed pilot training and served as a T-38 instructor pilot and evaluator at Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma. In 1989, he was selected to attend the Navy Test Pilot School, where he graduated with honors. He then served as an F-16 test pilot at Edwards Air Force Base in California. In 2000, Ford was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate, and he completed his training in 2001. He went on to fly on two space missions, serving as a mission specialist on STS-128 and commander of Expedition 34 to the International Space Station.

During his space career, Kevin Ford spent a total of 166 days in space and logged over 12 hours on spacewalks. He received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the field of space exploration, including the NASA Space Flight Medal and the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal. After retiring from NASA and the Air Force in 2014, Ford returned to Purdue University as a visiting professor of aeronautics and astronautics. He continues to give talks and inspire the next generation of space explorers.
