Michael Barratt Autograph
Michael Barratt is a medical doctor, NASA astronaut, and retired US Navy Captain. He was born in Vancouver, Washington, and graduated from the University of Washington School Of Medicine in 1985. Barratt went on to complete his residency training in internal medicine at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center. In 2000, Barratt was selected as a NASA astronaut candidate and reported for training at the Johnson Space Center later that year. He completed two spaceflights during his tenure at NASA, both on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft. In 2009, he flew to the International Space Station (ISS) as a flight engineer and spent six months living and working in space, conducting scientific experiments, and performing maintenance tasks. His second flight to the ISS was in 2011, this time as a crew member of STS-133, the final mission of the Space Shuttle Discovery.
Barratt's space career also includes serving as NASA's deputy chief scientist for exploration and as a medical consultant for the development of the Orion spacecraft. He has published numerous scientific articles and book chapters on topics such as space medicine, human physiology in space, and astronaut health monitoring. After retiring from NASA in 2016, Barratt became the Chief Medical Officer and Director of Human Performance for the Axiom Space company, which aims to build a commercial space station for research and tourism.
