Robert Gibson is a retired American astronaut and former United States Navy officer who was born on October 1, 1946. Gibson has flown five Space Shuttle missions with NASA, making him one of the most experienced astronauts in the history of the American space program. He served as pilot on STS-41-B in February 1984, commander of STS-61-C in January 1986, commander of STS-27 in December 1988, commander of STS-47 in September 1992, and commander of STS-71 in June 1995. Before he became an astronaut, Gibson was a pilot in the U.S. Navy where he accumulated over 14,000 hours of flight time as pilot-in-command. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering from California Polytechnic State University in 1969, received his Naval aviator wings in October 1970, and went on to serve as an A-7 Corsair II attack pilot. After completing his naval career, Gibson joined NASA's astronaut program in 1978, and became part of the first group of space shuttle astronauts selected by NASA in 1978. Honors: Robert Gibson and Ryan Moretti (05/18/13): Robert Gibson and Ryan Moretti, both Grosse Ile High School graduates, demonstrated their work at Albion College’s Elkin R.
