In 1967 Parker was chosen to join NASA's astronaut program, underwent training, and successfully launched on his first space mission in August 1978, aboard the Challenger spacecraft. Parker made three subsequent spaceflight missions, becoming renowned for his experience and dedication to the cause of space exploration. One of the most remarkable accomplishments of Parker was his role as a lead astronaut on the radar-imaging missions of Jupiter and the outer planets. In 1992, he announced his retirement from NASA.

Parker has received numerous prestigious honors recognizing his important work and contributions to space exploration. Some of these awards include the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, NASA Space Flight Medal, and the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal, to mention but a few. He continues to inspire countless students and aspiring space explorers through his significant accomplishments and ongoing commitment to the advancement of science and technology.
