Schirra took part in Mercury's third mission, dubbed Sigma 7, on October 3, 1962. The successful six-orbit flight of the Mercury spacecraft marked the first instance of manual control being used for the guidance system, rather than the automatic controls that previous Mercury missions relied on. Schirra flew aboard Gemini 6 in December 1965, the fifth crewed mission of NASA's Gemini program. This mission is perhaps best known for the successful rendezvous of Gemini 6 with the unmanned Gemini 7 spacecraft. Finally, Schirra flew aboard Apollo 7 in October 1968, the first crewed mission of NASA's Apollo program following the disastrous Apollo 1 fire that killed three astronauts. The Apollo 7 mission was a major success and helped pave the way for future moon landings.

Wally Schirra retired from the Navy and NASA in 1969, after 15 years of service. Throughout his career as an astronaut, he was known for his calm demeanor and technical ability. He continued to work in the field of aeronautics, eventually becoming a spokesperson for many companies and promoting space education. Schirra died on May 3, 2007, at the age of 84. He is regarded as one of NASA's most capable and talented astronauts. Read even more about Wally Schirra at Wikipedia
