Walter Schirra Autographs
Walter Schirra was an American astronaut who was born on March 12, 1923, in Hackensack, New Jersey. He was one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts, who was selected by NASA in 1959 to participate in the agency's first manned spaceflight program. Schirra's space career began in 1961, when he made his first spaceflight as part of the Mercury-Atlas 8 mission.
After the successful completion of the Mercury program, Schirra was selected to participate in the Gemini program. He made two flights during the program, the first being the Gemini 6A mission in December 1965, which achieved the first manned rendezvous in space with Gemini 7, which was already in orbit. Schirra's second and final spaceflight came in 1968 as part of the Apollo 7 mission, which was the first manned Apollo program mission. During this mission, he and his crewmates tested the spacecraft's systems for 11 days in Earth orbit, making it the longest manned mission at that time.
Throughout his career, Schirra played a significant role in shaping the future of human spaceflight. He helped to develop new spacecraft technologies, and his experience and expertise helped to improve safety protocols and procedures for future missions. In recognition of his contributions, Schirra was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1988. He passed away on May 3, 2007, at the age of 84.
