Al Lewis was an American actor and comedian best known for his role as Grandpa Munster in the popular sitcom, The Munsters. The actor began his career in the 1950s as a circus performer and gradually transitioned to acting. He made his first television appearance in 1952 on the Jackie Gleason Show and went on to make numerous appearances on various TV shows such as Car 54, Where Are You? and Naked City.
Lewis' career breakthrough came in the mid-1960s when he was cast in The Munsters, the popular television series about a family of friendly monsters. Lewis played the role of Grandpa Munster, the aging, fanged and immortal father of Herman Munster, the head of the family. The show was a major success and ran for two seasons, making Lewis a household name. The show's success led to his being cast in numerous other television roles, including appearances on Love, American Style; Emergency!; and The Streets of San Francisco.
In addition to his acting career, Lewis was active in politics, running for governor of New York on the Green Party ticket in 1998. He was also an advocate for various social issues, including environmental protection and animal rights. Lewis continued to act up until his death in 2006, appearing in films and TV shows, including an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. His contribution to the entertainment industry remains unforgettable, and his enduring legacy remains an inspiration to many aspiring actors and comedians.
