After completing his education at the American Academy of Dramatic Art, Murray made his debut in the film, "Bus Stop" directed by Joshua Logan in 1956.
Murray's rise to stardom came from his tough-guy persona in a series of hit movies such as "A Hatful of Rain" in 1957, "The Hoodlum Priest" in 1961, and "Advise and Consent" in 1962. His performance in "Bus Stop" and "A Hatful of Rain" earned him Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor. He starred alongside Hollywood's most iconic actresses including Marilyn Monroe, Eva Marie Saint, and Geraldine Page. Murray's acting portrayal often reflected a deep vulnerability and sensitivity that captivated audiences worldwide.

In 1967, he wrote and directed "The Cross and the Switchblade," a Christian film based on a true story.
