Albert "Al" Holland was born on August 16, 1952 in Roanoke, Virginia. Holland started his professional baseball career in 1975 with the Tri-City Atoms, a minor league team in New York. He eventually made his way up to the majors, playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1980 before being traded to the San Francisco Giants in 1983. More about Al Holland

Holland's greatest season came in 1984 with the Phillies, where he had 25 saves and a 2.67 ERA as a relief pitcher. He helped lead the Phillies to the World Series that same year, though they ultimately lost to the Detroit Tigers. Holland remained a crucial member of the Phillies bullpen for several more seasons before ending his career with the California Angels in 1987.

Throughout his career, Holland was known for his exceptional fastball and his ability to strike batters out, earning him the nickname "Mr. Automatic" among teammates and fans. He retired with a career record of 47 wins, 48 losses, and 74 saves, with a 3.03 ERA.
