Zito won the American League Cy Young Award in 2002 after a season where he posted a 23-5 record with a 2.75 ERA. He played for the Athletics until the end of the 2006 season before signing a seven-year deal with the San Francisco Giants in 2007.

Zito's time with the Giants was not as successful as his previous years with the Athletics. Despite having some success in his early years with the team, he struggled with consistency and injuries. However, Zito played a crucial role in helping the Giants win the World Series in 2012. He threw a shutout in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series, which helped the Giants reach the World Series.
