Bill Russell was born on February 12, 1934, in Monroe, Louisiana. He grew up in Oakland, California, where he attended McClymonds High School. Russell was a star athlete in multiple sports, but he would ultimately become one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He attended the University of San Francisco from 1953 to 1956, where he led the basketball team to two NCAA championships. Russell was drafted by the Boston Celtics in 1956, and he would go on to play his entire 13-year career with the team. During that time, he won 11 NBA championships, a feat that no other player in NBA history has matched. Russell was the anchor of the Celtics' defense, and he is widely regarded as one of the best defensive players in the history of the game. He was also an excellent rebounder, leading the league in rebounds four times.
