He played college baseball at the University of Notre Dame and was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 11th round of the 1992 MLB draft. Counsell played for several teams during his 16-year Major League Baseball career, including the Florida Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers, Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, and Los Angeles Dodgers.
