Ruf’s dedication to the sport led him to play college baseball at Creighton University, where he played all four years and was awarded Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year in 2009. Ruf’s baseball career continued overseas in 2017 when he signed with the Samsung Lions of the Korean Baseball Organization. He spent two seasons with the team, hitting 70 home runs and 202 RBIs. Ruf’s success in Korea led to him being signed by the San Francisco Giants in January 2020. He made the Giants’ opening day roster and had a strong season, hitting 5 home runs and batting .276 in 36 games for the team.
