Don Newcombe Autographs
Don Newcombe was an American professional baseball player born in Virginia in 1926. He had a successful career as a pitcher, playing for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers from 1949 to 1960. He was one of the first African-American pitchers to play in the major leagues and was a key player on the teams that won the World Series in 1955 and 1959.
Newcombe made his professional debut with the Newark Eagles of the Negro leagues in 1944 before being signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1946. After spending time in the minor leagues, he made his major league debut in 1949 and quickly made a name for himself as an excellent pitcher. He won the National League Rookie of the Year award that year and went on to have a great career, earning three All-Star selections and the National League Cy Young award in 1956.
Off the field, Newcombe struggled with alcoholism for many years, which led to several stints in rehab in the 1960s. He eventually overcame his addiction and went on to serve as a mentor to many other players struggling with similar issues. In recognition of his achievements both on and off the field, Newcombe was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996. He remained involved in baseball throughout his life, serving as a special adviser to the Dodgers and working with young players through his Don Newcombe Foundation. He passed away in 2019 at the age of 92.
