Doyle Alexander Autographs
Doyle Alexander was a right-handed pitcher who played major league baseball from 1971 to 1989. He was born on September 4, 1950, in Cordova, Alabama. He played for nine different teams during his career, starting with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1971 and ending with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1989. Alexander was known for his reliable arm and his ability to throw strikes consistently. He was a workhorse pitcher who regularly threw over 200 innings per season, and his career ERA was an impressive 3.76.
Alexander's best years were in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He had his best season in 1983 when he played for the Detroit Tigers. He won 17 games that year and had an ERA of just 3.34. Alexander helped lead the Tigers to the American League Eastern Division title that year, but they lost in the League Championship Series to the Baltimore Orioles. Alexander's biggest moment came in 1987 when he was traded to the Minnesota Twins mid-season. He went 9-0 with a 1.53 ERA down the stretch, leading the Twins to the AL West title. Alexander also started Game 1 of the ALCS that year against the Detroit Tigers, allowing just two runs in a complete game victory.
Doyle Alexander retired from baseball after the 1989 season. He finished his career with a record of 194-174 and 40 complete games. Alexander was also involved in one of the most famous trades in baseball history. In 1987, he was traded from the Atlanta Braves to the Detroit Tigers for a minor league pitcher named John Smoltz. Smoltz would go on to become a Hall of Fame pitcher, but at the time, Alexander was seen as the missing piece for the Tigers to make a playoff run. While the Tigers won the AL East that year, many baseball fans now view this trade as one of the most lopsided in history.
