White quickly proved himself to be a skilled second baseman with an outstanding defensive ability. Over the course of his career, he won eight Gold Glove awards and was considered to be one of the best defensive players of his generation. White was also a four-time All-Star and helped the Royals win the American League pennant in 1980, 1985, and 1986, as well as the World Series in 1985.

Although White was not known for his batting, he still managed to finish his career with 1,603 hits, 160 home runs, and 886 runs batted in. In recognition of his contributions to the sport, the Royals retired his number 20 jersey in 1995. After retiring from baseball in 1990, White went on to serve as a broadcaster and coach for the Royals organization. Today, he is considered to be one of the most successful and respected players in the history of the Kansas City Royals.
