In his debut year, he played for the Gulf Coast Dodgers of the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. Gutierrez remained with the Dodgers organization for six seasons before he was traded to the Cleveland Indians in 2004. He played a significant role in the Indians' 2007 playoff team, where he hit a game-winning grand slam in the top of the 12th inning in the American League Division Series.

Gutierrez went on to play for the Seattle Mariners in 2009, where he earned his only Gold Glove Award for his exceptional defensive skills. He played with the Mariners until 2016, where he was named the 2016 American League Comeback Player of the Year after continuously battling illness and injuries throughout his career. He then briefly played for the Los Angeles Dodgers before retiring in 2018. Gutierrez's career batting average was .257, and he had 95 home runs, 141 doubles, and 347 runs batted in in his 840 games played over his 13-year career.
