Gene Baker Autographs

Gene BakerGene Baker was a professional baseball player born on June 15, 1925, in Davenport, Iowa. He began his baseball career playing for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League, where he played shortstop alongside Jackie Robinson. In 1953, he was signed by the Chicago Cubs and became the team's starting second baseman for the next four years.
Baker was a skilled defensive player, earning a reputation as one of the best second basemen of his time. He was also a consistent hitter, with a career batting average of .265. In 1955, he was selected to play in the All-Star game and helped the Cubs win the National League pennant that same year, the team's first in 39 years. Despite his success, Baker's career was cut short due to injury. He retired in 1957 with five seasons under his belt and a lasting legacy in the game of baseball.
After his playing days, Baker became a coach and manager, including stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants. He was also a pioneer in the integration of baseball coaching staff, becoming the first Black coach in the National League with the Pirates. Gene Baker passed away on December 1, 1999, but his contributions to the game of baseball, as a player and coach, continue to impact the sport to this day.
