Frazier was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 3rd round of the 1976 MLB draft, but he was later traded to the New York Yankees in 1978. He made his MLB debut with the Yankees on September 5, 1978, and quickly became an integral part of their bullpen. Frazier played for the Yankees until 1983, when he was traded to the Cleveland Indians. He also played for the Chicago Cubs and the Minnesota Twins before retiring from professional baseball in 1987.

During his career, Frazier was known for his power pitching and his ability to get crucial outs in tight situations. He appeared in two World Series with the Yankees in 1981 and 1982, earning a championship ring in 1981. In 1980, he set a then-record for most appearances in a single season by a reliever with 81, a record that stood for over a decade. Overall, Frazier had a career record of 35-43 with 29 saves and a 4.20 ERA in 543 games. After retiring from baseball, Frazier became a commentator for the Yankees and continued to stay involved in the game as a coach and a mentor to young players.
