Hank Greenberg was born in New York City in 1911 and grew up playing baseball in the city's sandlots. He was scouted by the Detroit Tigers in 1929 and signed with the team in 1930 as a first baseman. Though he was only 19 years old when he joined the Tigers, Greenberg quickly became a key player on the team, known for his powerful hitting and strong work ethic. Over the course of his career, Greenberg established himself as one of the greatest hitters of his time. He had a career batting average of .313, hit 331 home runs, and had 1,276 runs batted in (RBI). He won two Most Valuable Player awards and seven All-Star selections.
