He played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Oakland Athletics, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, and the Kansas City Royals. He was known for his strong arm behind the plate, his gritty style of play, and his ability to hit for average. Kendall was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first round of the 1992 MLB draft. He made his debut with the Pirates in 1996 and quickly established himself as one of the best catchers in the game. In 2000, he led the National League in hits with 177 and was named to his first of three All-Star teams.
