Jim Mudcat Grant was a professional baseball player born in Lacoochee, Florida, in 1935. Grant made his Major League Baseball debut with the Cleveland Indians in 1958, and he played for the team until 1964. He was a right-handed starting pitcher, and his best season for the Indians came in 1963 when he won 21 games, had an ERA of 3.29, and was named to the American League All-Star Team. In addition to playing for the Indians, Jim Mudcat Grant also played for five other Major League Baseball teams during his career, including the Minnesota Twins, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Montreal Expos, the Oakland Athletics, and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Grant pitched in a total of 571 games and had a record of 145-119 with an ERA of 3.63. He was a good hitting pitcher as well, with a career batting average of .171, and he hit 14 home runs throughout his career.

After retiring from playing baseball, Jim Mudcat Grant went on to become a broadcaster and motivational speaker. He also co-wrote a book about his life in baseball called "The Black Aces: Baseball's Only African-American Twenty-Game Winners." Grant was inducted into the Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame in 2000, and he was awarded the Bob Feller Man of the Year Award in 2014 for his humanitarian work. Despite facing racism and discrimination throughout his baseball career, Jim Mudcat Grant persevered and became one of the most beloved players in baseball history.
