Joakim Soria is a professional baseball pitcher born on May 18, 1984, in Monclova, Coahuila, Mexico. He started his baseball career in 2001 when he joined the Mexican League with the Sultanes de Monclova team. He played for them for three seasons until 2006 when he was signed as a free agent by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He then played for the Dodgers' affiliates team for two years before being traded to the Kansas City Royals.
Soria played for the Kansas City Royals from 2007 to 2011 and was their primary closer for most of his tenure. He made his Major League debut with the Royals on April 4, 2007. He recorded his first save on April 14 the same year. In 2008 he had a breakout year earning his first All-Star selection while posting a 1.60 ERA with 42 saves. He also won the AL Delivery Man of the Year Award. He continued to play well for the Royals, becoming the fastest player in Royals history to reach 100 saves. In 2011 he signed a two-year deal worth $8 million with the San Francisco Giants. He had another successful season in 2014 with the Detroit Tigers posting a 1.99 ERA and recording 23 saves.
Soria was traded to the Texas Rangers in 2015, where he continued to play as a relief pitcher, earning 17 saves with a 2.70 ERA in 2016. He then signed a contract with the Kansas City Royals once again in 2018, playing for them for two seasons before being traded to the Oakland Athletics. He continues to be an active part of the MLB, with an accumulated tally of 223 saves and earning two All-Star selections. Soria's baseball career is marked by consistent performance as a relief pitcher with an impressive record of saves across different teams in the league.
