John Russell attended the University of Oklahoma, where he played college baseball. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1st round (13th pick) of the 1982 amateur draft. He made his major league debut on September 2, 1984, for the Phillies and played his final game on October 1, 1993, for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Over his MLB career, he batted .225, hitting 26 home runs and 102 RBIs. He also caught ten players stealing and had a fielding percentage of .982.

After his playing career, John Russell began coaching in the MLB. He served as the bench coach for the Philadelphia Phillies and the third base coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 2008, he was hired as the Pirates' manager, a position he held until 2010. He is currently the minor league field coordinator for the Baltimore Orioles. Russell's contributions to the MLB as a player, coach, and manager have solidified his place in baseball history.
