After graduating from Goose Creek High School, Smoak attended the University of South Carolina and played college baseball for the Gamecocks. Smoak was drafted in the first round (11th overall) of the 2008 MLB draft by the Texas Rangers. He made his Major League debut in 2010 and played for the Rangers until he was traded to the Seattle Mariners in 2010. With the Mariners, Smoak had his most successful years, hitting over 20 home runs in three seasons and being named the 2014 American League Player of the Week.

In 2015, Smoak was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays, where he has played ever since. In 2017, he hit a career-high 38 home runs and helped lead the Blue Jays to the American League Division Series. Despite a slow start in 2018, Smoak bounced back in the second half of the season and finished the year with a .242 batting average and 25 home runs.
