Kouzmanoff's career began in 2006 with the Cleveland Indians, where he played 15 games before being traded to the San Diego Padres in 2007 in exchange for second baseman Josh Barfield. Kouzmanoff went on to have a decent season with the Padres, hitting 18 home runs and driving in 74 runs. In 2009, he hit a career-high 23 homers and finished the year with 88 runs batted in (RBI).

After several seasons with the Padres, Kouzmanoff was traded to the Oakland Athletics in 2010. During his time with the Athletics, Kouzmanoff became known for his steady glove work and good bat. He was often praised for his fielding, which earned him several highlight-reel plays throughout his tenure with the team. Despite bouncing around the league, Kouzmanoff remained a solid contributor, admitting that his love of the game and his desire to continue playing kept him going.
