Larry Doby was a professional baseball player who became the first African American player in the American League. He was born on December 13, 1923, in Camden, South Carolina, and grew up in New Jersey. In 1942, he was signed by the Newark Eagles, a Negro League team, and quickly became a standout player. Doby’s baseball career took off in 1947 when he was signed by the Cleveland Indians, becoming the first black player in the American League. Despite facing racism and discrimination from fans and some teammates, Doby persevered and became a key player for the Indians. He helped his team win two pennants and a World Series championship in 1948. Doby played in the major leagues for 13 seasons, amassing impressive stats, including a batting average of .283 and 253 home runs.
