Larry Herndon was born on November 3, 1953, in Sunflower, Mississippi. He was a talented baseball player from an early age and was eventually drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1971. He continued to play in the Cardinals’ minor league system for several years before finally making his major league debut with the team in 1974. Herndon’s real breakout year came in 1982 as a member of the Detroit Tigers. He played in 156 games that season, batting .310 with 20 home runs and 94 RBIs. This performance helped lead the Tigers to a division title, and Herndon was named the MVP of the 1982 American League Championship Series. Herndon continued to play with the Tigers for several more seasons, even helping them win the World Series in 1984.
