Castellanos began his professional baseball career in 2010, with the Gulf Coast League Tigers. He quickly moved up the ranks and made his major league debut with the Detroit Tigers in 2013. Castellanos played for the Tigers for six seasons before being traded to the Chicago Cubs in 2019. In 2020, he signed with the Cincinnati Reds as a free agent.

Castellanos is known for his powerful hitting and his ability to play multiple positions on defense. He has been recognized for his accomplishments in the game, including being named the Tigers' Minor League Player of the Year in 2012 and the National League Player of the Week for the week of August 17, 2020, while playing for the Reds.
