Hochevar went on to attend the University of Tennessee, where he played college baseball for three years. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 39th round of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft but decided to return to school for his senior year. In 2006, he was drafted first overall by the Kansas City Royals, making him the first pitcher ever to be selected with the top pick.

Hochevar made his major league debut with the Royals on September 8, 2007. He played for the team for nine seasons, primarily as a starting pitcher. In 2015, Hochevar underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the entire season. He returned to the team in 2016 as a relief pitcher, and he retired from the sport in 2018. Over the course of his career, Hochevar had a 4.98 earned run average (ERA) with 628 strikeouts in 881 innings pitched. He was noted for his powerful fastball and slider.
