Mark "The Bird" Fidrych was an American baseball player. Born on August 14, 1954, he grew up in Northborough, Massachusetts. Fidrych was an unorthodox right-handed pitcher who gained fame during his brief major league baseball career with the Detroit Tigers from 1976-1980. He made his debut in 1976 and quickly became a sensation, known for his curly mop of hair and his quirky on-field antics. Fidrych won the American League Rookie of the Year in 1976, posting an impressive 2.34 ERA with 19 complete games in 29 starts. He was selected to the All-Star team that season and led the league in complete games and innings pitched.
