Fidrych won the American League Rookie of the Year in 1976, posting an impressive 2.34 ERA with 19 complete games in 29 starts. He was selected to the All-Star team that season and led the league in complete games and innings pitched. Fidrych's antics on the field - like hugging the ball after every out and talking to himself - quickly made him a fan favorite. Baseball fans all over the country quickly fell in love with "The Bird."

Unfortunately, Fidrych's career was short-lived. Injuries limited him to just 27 games over the next four seasons, and he was eventually released by the Tigers in 1982. Fidrych attempted a comeback in 1983 but was released by the Boston Red Sox after a few minor league appearances. He retired from baseball at age 29 with a career record of 29-19 and an ERA of 3.10. Despite his brief career, Fidrych remains one of the most beloved baseball players of all time, remembered for his infectious personality and his incredible talent on the mound.
