Green was born on September 10, 1978, in Pensacola, Florida, and attended Pensacola Catholic High School, where he played baseball and football. After high school, Green was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 32nd round of the 1998 Major League Baseball draft, but he did not sign with the team and instead chose to play college baseball at Georgia Perimeter College. In 1999, Green was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 11th round of the draft and signed with the team. He made his Major League Baseball debut with the Cubs in 2004 and played for several teams throughout his career, including the Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, and Miami Marlins. Green was primarily a middle infielder and had a career batting average of .236 with 17 home runs and 99 RBIs.

Green is perhaps best known for his performance in the 2009 American League Division Series while playing for the Boston Red Sox. In Game 3 of the series against the Los Angeles Angels, Green hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to give the Red Sox a 2-1 lead, which they held on to win the game. The Red Sox went on to win the series and advance to the American League Championship Series.
