Throughout his 17-year career, Hernandez played for six different Major League Baseball teams, including the California Angels, San Diego Padres, Baltimore Orioles, Cincinnati Reds, Colorado Rockies, and Los Angeles Dodgers. He is perhaps best known for his time with the Athletics, where he served as the primary catcher from 2000 to 2003 and was an important part of three playoff teams. He was known for his strong arm, defensive skills, and ability to effectively manage a pitching staff.

Over the course of his career, Hernandez amassed a .263 batting average, hit 169 home runs, and had 757 RBI. He was also named an All-Star twice in 2003 and 2006.
