Boone began his professional baseball career in 1948, when he signed with the Cleveland Indians. During his time with the Indians, he played in two All-Star games and helped the team win the American League Pennant in 1954. In 1955, Boone was traded to the Detroit Tigers, where he had another successful season, hitting 25 home runs and earning his third All-Star selection.
