Reggie Smith Autographs
Reggie Smith, born Carl Reginald Smith on April 2, 1945, in Los Angeles, California, was a versatile and underrated player in Major League Baseball. He played for 17 seasons (1966-1982) with the Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Francisco Giants. Smith was a switch-hitter known for his strong throwing arm, power hitting, and defensive skills in both center and right field.
Throughout his career, Smith appeared in 1,987 games, hit 314 home runs, drove in 1,092 runs, and maintained a .287 batting average. He was a seven-time All-Star and won a Gold Glove in 1968. Smith's best offensive season came in 1977 with the Dodgers, when he posted a .307 batting average with 32 home runs and 87 RBIs, leading the National League in on-base percentage. He appeared in four World Series, winning a championship with the Dodgers in 1981.
After retiring from MLB, Smith played two seasons in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball league with the Yomiuri Giants. He later returned to the Dodgers organization as a coach, minor league instructor, and player development official. Smith also served as a hitting coach for various USA Baseball teams, including the gold medal-winning squad at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. His career 137 OPS+ places him ahead of several Hall of Famers, solidifying his status as one of the most underappreciated players of his era.
