Throughout his career, Ordonez was regarded as a defensive specialist with a great glove at the shortstop position. His fielding prowess earned him three consecutive Gold Glove Awards from 1997 to 1999, and he became the first Met to win the award since Keith Hernandez in 1985. Ordonez was known for his acrobatic plays and incredible range, and his nickname among fans was "Rey O" or "El Maestro." In addition to his defensive skills, Ordonez also proved to be a capable hitter, batting .246 in his career with the Mets and playing a pivotal role in the team's success.

Ordonez retired from baseball in 2004 but remained active in the sport. He served as a coach in the minor leagues and worked as a minor league manager for several years. Ordonez's defensive skills on the field revolutionized the shortstop position, and he inspired many players to follow in his footsteps. He will forever be remembered as one of the greatest defenders to ever play the sport of baseball. Read even more about Rey Ordonez at Wikipedia
