In 2003, Marcum began his professional baseball career as he was picked by the Toronto Blue Jays as a third-round draft pick. He made his MLB debut on September 6, 2005, after spending two seasons in the minors. Initially, he was used in relief but quickly worked his way up to the pitching rotation. He had five-plus years with the team and became one of the Blue Jays' best pitchers, delivering a memorable 2010 season to lead his team in strikeouts. However, his MLB career, particularly with the Blue Jays, faced significant setbacks due to a series of injuries.

In 2013, Marcum signed with the New York Mets, but his injury troubles persisted, leading to a disappointing season. After a few more attempts at making a comeback into the league, he formally announced his retirement in early 2016. Throughout his MLB career, Shaun Marcum played in 187 games winning 61 of them with an ERA of 3.93. Marcum's striking pitch and prowess on the mound earned him a devoted following in the MLB community, and his journey serves as an inspiration to other players.
