Terry Steinbach is a retired American professional baseball player, who spent his entire career as a catcher in Major League Baseball (MLB) with the Oakland Athletics, the Minnesota Twins, and ended his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1999. Steinbach was born on March 2, 1962, in New Ulm, Minnesota, and graduated from a local high school. Steinbach’s professional career began in 1986 when he was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 9th round of the MLB draft. He immediately joined their ranks, playing in 37 games in his rookie season. Steinbach is known for his outstanding performances as a catcher for Oakland Athletics throughout the 1980s and 1990s. During his stint with the Oakland Athletics, he won three Gold Glove Awards, was named to three All-Star teams, and helped the team to three consecutive World Series from 1988-1990. Steinbach’s stellar defense and leadership skills cemented his position as a fan-favorite and a core player, and his stellar performances were considered instrumental in Oakland’s highly successful run during this time.

Steinbach later joined the Minnesota Twins in 1997, where he continued to make an impact as a career backup catcher. In his final season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Steinbach opted to retire from professional baseball by the end of the 1999 season, at the age of 37. Steinbach was named one of the 100 Greatest Twins Players in team history, exhibiting the impact he left on baseball during his illustrious career. Steinbach’s other accomplishments include a Silver Slugger Award, finishing with a .271 career batting average and accumulating 162 home runs and 745 RBI throughout his career. Today, Terry Steinbach is considered one of the best catchers of his time, and his contributions to the Oakland Athletics throughout the 1980s and 1990s are still celebrated by fans today.
