Waite Hoyt was born on September 9, 1899, in Brooklyn, New York City, USA. He was a professional baseball player, a right-handed pitcher, who played Major League Baseball (MLB) for 21 seasons from 1918 to 1938. He is widely considered one of the greatest pitchers of his era and is particularly remembered for his performances with the New York Yankees. Hoyt helped the Yankees win the American League pennant and the World Series championship in 1927 and 1928. Hoyt made his MLB debut with the New York Giants in 1918 but was soon traded to the Red Sox, where he spent six seasons before moving to the Yankees in 1921. He had a banner year in 1927, recording 22 wins, 6 losses, and a 2.63 earned run average (ERA), including three wins in the World Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. His performance helped him finish second in the American League MVP race that year. Hoyt continued to play for the Yankees until 1929, playing a significant role in helping the team win two consecutive World Series titles.

In 1969, Hoyt was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame for his outstanding career as a pitcher. He finished his career with 237 wins, 182 losses, and a 3.59 ERA. After his playing days, Hoyt became a broadcaster and spent several years as a play-by-play commentator for NBC's Game of the Week. He continued to be associated with baseball throughout his life and passed away on August 25, 1984, at the age of 84.
