Warren Spahn

Warren Spahn was an American left-handed pitcher who played for the Boston Braves, Milwaukee Braves, New York Mets, and San Francisco Giants during his Major League Baseball (MLB) career. Born on April 23, 1921, in Buffalo, New York, Spahn began his baseball journey in 1942 when he signed with the Boston Braves. He served in World War II and returned to the Braves in 1946. Spahn's MLB career spanned over two decades, and he won 363 games, second-most among left-handers in baseball history. He also recorded 2,583 strikeouts and a 3.09 ERA. Spahn won the National League Cy Young Award in 1957, became a 14-time All-Star, and led the league in wins eight times. He was also the winner of the prestigious Warren C. Giles Trophy twice, which is a trophy awarded by Baseball Writers' Association of America for being the best pitcher in the National League.

Spahn played a critical role in leading the Milwaukee Braves to the World Series in 1957 and 1958, with his resilient performances on the field being the backbone of the team. He continued to play until age 44 and retired in 1965 with a career that made him an automatic inductee to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. After his playing career, Spahn remained involved with baseball, including managing the Tulsa Oilers, serving as the pitching coach for the Cleveland Indians, and doing color commentary for television broadcasts.
