Zack Wheeler is an American professional baseball player who currently pitches for the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was born on May 30, 1990, in Smyrna, Georgia. Wheeler attended East Paulding High School in Dallas, Georgia, where he played as a pitcher and shortstop. He was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the first round of the 2009 Major League Baseball draft.
Wheeler made his MLB debut with the New York Mets in 2013 after being traded from the Giants. In his first season, he pitched 100 innings, recording a 7-5 record with a 3.42 ERA. In August 2014, he was shut down for the remainder of the season due to a Tommy John surgery, which forced him to sit out the entire 2015 season. Wheeler returned to the Mets in 2016 but struggled with consistency and injuries over the next two seasons.
In 2019, Wheeler signed a five-year, $118 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. In his first season with the team, he recorded an 11-8 record with a 3.96 ERA and played a crucial role in the Phillies' starting rotation. Despite the shortened 2020 season, Wheeler continued to excel with a 4-2 record and a 2.92 ERA. With his impressive performances, Wheeler has cemented himself as a reliable and valuable starting pitcher in the MLB.
