Andersen was not selected in the 1999 NBA Draft but did manage to earn a spot on the NBA Development League's Fayetteville Patriots. He quickly caught the attention of the Denver Nuggets, who signed him to a contract in 2001. During his rookie season, Andersen's impressive leaping ability and shot-blocking skills helped him become a fan favorite. In 2005 he was suspended for violating the league's substance abuse policy, but he returned stronger than ever, helping the Nuggets reach the playoffs in 2008 and earning the NBA's Most Improved Player Award that season.

Throughout his NBA career, Andersen played for multiple teams, including the New Orleans Hornets, Memphis Grizzlies, Miami Heat, and Cleveland Cavaliers. He was also a member of the Miami Heat when they won the NBA championship in 2013. Andersen retired from basketball in 2017 with a career average of 5.4 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game. Despite his less-than-stellar statistics, Andersen's energy, athleticism, and shot-blocking ability made him a valuable asset to every team he played for.
