Dave Cowens was born on October 25, 1948, in Newport, Kentucky. He had an impressive basketball career, especially in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Cowens started playing basketball while in high school and continued through college, where he played for Florida State University. In 1970, Cowens was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the first round, fourth overall. He quickly became a key player for the team and helped lead the Celtics to two NBA Championships in 1974 and 1976. Cowens was known for his aggressive playing style, earning him the nickname “the Beast.” He was also known for his leadership abilities, which led him to become the team captain in 1978. Cowens played for the Celtics for ten seasons before being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in 1980. He retired in 1983 with career averages of 17.6 points, 13.6 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game.

After retiring from basketball, Cowens went into coaching. He started as an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs before becoming a head coach for the Charlotte Hornets and Golden State Warriors. Cowens also worked as an assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons and served as their head coach for part of a season.
