Under Auerbach's tutelage, the Celtics were known for their fast-paced, team-oriented playing style that paved the way for modern basketball. He emphasized the importance of defense, ball movement, and teamwork, which made the team a dominant force in the league. Auerbach was also a master of strategy, introducing the concept of the sixth man (using a substitute player to energize the team), and employing a full-court pressure defense that is still used in the NBA today. He was known for his fiery personality and competitive spirit, which inspired his players and earned him the nickname "The Coach."

After retiring as head coach in 1966, Auerbach became the Celtics' general manager, a position he held until 1984. During his tenure, the Celtics continued to be a powerhouse in the league, winning seven more championships. Auerbach was instrumental in building and recruiting some of the NBA's greatest players, including Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, John Havlicek, and Larry Bird. His contributions to basketball were celebrated during his lifetime and after his death in 2006, which was marked by tributes and memorials from players and coaches. Today, he is remembered as a visionary leader who revolutionized the game of basketball and set the standard for future generations of coaches and players.
