Henry Cooper Autographs
Henry Cooper was an English heavyweight boxer, born on May 3, 1934, in London. He initially gained popularity as an amateur boxer, winning the ABA heavyweight title in 1952 and 1953. He turned professional in 1954 and began making a name for himself in the British boxing scene. Cooper earned the nickname 'Our 'Enry' for his popularity among the British public.
Cooper's boxing career reached its peak during the 1960s. In 1959, he fought Floyd Patterson for the world heavyweight title but lost the match in the fifth round due to a cut above his eye. However, he went on to become the British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion in 1965, a title he held until his retirement in 1971. Cooper's signature move in the ring was his left hook, which he used to devastating effect, winning 27 of his 40 career wins by knockout.
Cooper's most famous fight came against Muhammad Ali, then known as Cassius Clay, on June 18, 1963. In the fourth round, Cooper delivered a left hook to Ali's jaw that left him struggling to regain his footing. However, the bell rang, and Ali was able to recover in his corner. In the fifth round, Ali regained his composure and, after delivering several powerful blows, caused a cut above Cooper's eye, forcing the fight to be stopped. This fight became known as 'Enry's Ammer,' cementing Cooper as one of the most prominent British boxers of his time. Cooper passed away on May 1, 2011, at the age of 76, but his legacy as an icon of British sport and boxing lives on.
