Akers began his professional career in 1998 with the Washington Redskins, where he played for one season before moving on to the Philadelphia Eagles in 1999. He went on to become one of the most prolific kickers in Eagles history and one of the most reliable kickers in the league during his tenure. Akers set numerous records during his career, including the NFL record for most points scored in a single season with 166 during the 2011 season. He was named to six Pro Bowls, was a five-time All-Pro selection, and was named to the Philadelphia Eagles' 75th Anniversary Team in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the franchise.

After leaving the Eagles in 2010, Akers played for the San Francisco 49ers for two seasons before finishing his career with the Detroit Lions in 2013. He retired as one of the most successful kickers in NFL history, finishing his career with 1,721 points, seventh most in NFL history.
