Derrick Mason was born on January 17, 1974, in Detroit, Michigan. He discovered his love for American football while attending Mumford High School, where he played as a wide receiver. His talent earned him a scholarship to play at Michigan State University, where he continued to impress on the field. Mason played for fifteen years in the NFL, spending most of his career with the Titans and the Baltimore Ravens. He set several franchise records during his time with the Titans, including most receptions (943), receiving yards (12,061), and touchdowns (55). He played in two Pro Bowls and was named First-team All-Pro in 2000. In 2009, as a Raven, he became the 31st player in NFL history to record 10,000 receiving yards.

Off the field, Mason was involved in numerous philanthropic endeavors. He founded "The Derrick Mason Foundation" in 2002 to help underprivileged children and families facing financial difficulties. He also created "The Big D Back-to-School Drive," which provided school supplies to more than 11,000 students in his hometown of Nashville.
