Brooks was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the first round of the 1981 NFL Draft, 24th overall. He spent four seasons with the Chargers before being traded to the Cincinnati Bengals in 1984. It was with the Bengals that Brooks had his greatest success on the field. In 1986, he rushed for 1,087 yards and caught 50 passes for 559 yards, earning his first Pro Bowl selection. Brooks continued to be a key player for the Bengals, helping them reach the Super Bowl in 1989, though they lost to the San Francisco 49ers. He spent his final two seasons with the Cleveland Browns before retiring in 1993.

Over his career, Brooks rushed for 7,962 yards and 49 touchdowns, caught 383 passes for 3,012 yards and 23 touchdowns, and returned 3 kickoffs for touchdowns. He was a four-time Pro Bowl selection and earned All-Pro honors once. After his playing career, Brooks became a coach, working as an assistant coach for multiple NFL teams. He was inducted into the Cincinnati Bengals' Ring of Honor in 2006.
